About Swedish Women’s Educational Association Atlanta
SWEA is a global non-profit organization comprised of approximately 8,000 Swedish and Swedish-speaking women who live or have lived outside of Sweden. Our mission is to protect and inform about the Swedish culture, tradition, and language.
SWEA Atlanta started in 1996 and today has about 100 members. We Atlanta Sweas are a diverse group of women, ranging in age from 20 to 90 and spanning all career fields and backgrounds. Many of us have lived in the US for twenty years or more, others have just arrived. SWEA Atlanta serves as the social network for Swedish-speaking women in Atlanta through a varied and exciting calendar of events. We also assist newly-arrived Swedes navigate the their new town.
In order to meet our stated goal, SWEA Atlanta sponsors a scholarship awarded to a student who plans on studying in or about Sweden. We also donate to the Swedish School of Atlanta. Our biggest fundraising event of the year is the SWEA Atlanta Annual Christmas Bazaar, held traditionally on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Our social committee organizes guest speakers from Sweden and educational outings to local Atlanta sights. We also have movie nights, book swap parties, an annual “semmelträff”, Swedish crawfish parties, the much-loved Christmas “julbord”, and a variety of joint events with the other Swedish groups in Atlanta.
